What it’s like to be a ‘glass child’
  + stars: | 2024-04-23 | by ( Taylor Nicioli | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
Meneses Maples refers to herself as an adult “glass child,” the sibling of a person with a mental or physical disability. How does a glass child disappear? It is important not to assume what the needs of a glass child are, said Missud, the New York psychotherapist. More than a decade after her TEDx presentation, Meneses Maples receives messages from parents of glass children seeking her advice. Meneses Maples said she hopes to inspire research on glass children by spreading the word through presentations and workshops.

Ohio just legalized cannabis. Now comes the hard part
  + stars: | 2023-11-09 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Ohio voters’ approval of a legalization measure on Tuesday comes just months after cannabis saw some of its most significant movements at the federal level. “I honestly think it will have massive reverberating effects on what Congress has to do about this.”More than two-thirds of US states have legalized cannabis in some capacity: 38 states have approved comprehensive medical cannabis programs, and Ohio brings the recreational total to 24 states. Joshua A. Bickel/APExisting medical cannabis dispensaries will have the opportunity to be grandfathered in and have first crack at licenses, but municipalities can decide whether to allow sales. “In 2018, Michigan fully legalized cannabis, set a relatively low tax rate and my perception is it’s been a fairly successful industry there.”Michigan’s cannabis sales hit a record $276 million in July, a time when industry members there and beyond have struggled. CNN —Without A Fight stormed to victory at this year’s Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, handing jockey Mark Zahra consecutive wins in Australia’s most prestigious horse race. “It’s amazing to do it once, but to do it again on a different horse, back-to-back, my feet haven’t touched the ground yet,” Zahra told Sky Sports Racing after the famous win. Gold Trip, the horse Zahra won on last year, was also entered into this year’s race, but the jockey opted instead to ride Without A Fight. Zahra is the first jockey to win consecutive Melbourne Cups since Glen Boss rode Makybe Diva to three straight wins between 2003 and 2005. Winning trainer Sam Freedman, whose family has a rich and successful history in the sport, praised Zahra for an “extraordinary ride” but also credited his father for helping him train a Melbourne Cup winner.

What mortgage rates over 7% mean for the housing market
  + stars: | 2023-08-20 | by ( Anna Bahney | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Washington, DC CNN —An already miserably unaffordable housing market is getting more expensive. As mortgage rates top 7% — the highest they’ve been in 21 years according to Freddie Mac — home buyers face ballooning costs. “The fact that we are seeing rates at these highs is having an impact on the housing market,” Freedman said. “That’s bad news for mortgage rates which correspondingly may rise to 8%,” he said. “We thought mortgage rates would be much lower by now,” she said.

It melds elements of mystery and humanity with a dose of high drama as rescuers race against time in their frantic search for a missing vessel with five souls aboard. Should a missing tourism vessel for the ultra-wealthy take precedence over other consequential stories happening around the world? While the press took heat for around-the-clock coverage of MH370, the tragedy was arguably far more worthy of coverage. And yet, the disaster did not inspire a level of coverage close to what major news organizations have devoted to the ocean submersible. Eric Deggans, NPR’s media critic and an adjunct instructor at Duke University, conceded that the coverage of the Titanic vessel has perhaps been over-torqued in recent days.

CNN —A new study on breast cancer deaths raises questions around whether Black women should screen at earlier ages. Even though Black women have a 4% lower incidence rate of breast cancer than White women, they have a 40% higher breast cancer death rate. “When the breast cancer mortality rate for Black women in their 40s is 27 deaths per 100,000 person-years, this means 27 out of every 100,000 Black women aged 40-49 in the US die of breast cancer during one year of follow-up. They also wrote that health policy makers should pursue equity, not just equality, when it comes to breast cancer screening as a tool to help reduce breast cancer death rates. Having dense tissue in the breast can make it more difficult for radiologists to identify breast cancer on a mammogram, and women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer.
